Sergio Tognetti, born in Florence in 1969, achieved the PhD in Rural and Urban History at the University of Perugia in 1999. In the academic year 2000/2001 he was a research fellow at Villa I Tatti (The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies). Tognetti is editor of the journal «Archivio Storico Italiano» (the most ancient Italian historical review), and since 2006 he is associate professor of Medieval History at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Cagliari.

Specialized in economic history, Sergio Tognetti has been carrying out his researches in history of trade, bank and manufactories particularly regarding Tuscany between 13th and 16th century. His research focuses on the entrepreneurial households who contributed to the prosperity of the regional economy in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, on the international activity of Tuscan merchant bankers and on the creation of business networks based on the wide European and Mediterranean area.

Tognetti is author of several books and he took part in many seminars and conferences in Italy and abroad at Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Valencia, London, Granada.
