Professor Maria Nadia Covini’s research is concerned primarily with the history of the institutions of the State of Milan in 15th century. Her first works focused on military institutions, and studied the military network of captains, condottieri and officers which was shaped around the Sforza dukes. More recent researches has been devoted to the role of the lawyers in the State, their place in institutions and offices, and their role in the political life of their cities.

Prof. Covini has also written on various aspects of the medieval diplomacy in Renaissance Italy, and edited three volumes of dispatches of Gonzaga’s ambassadors. She is also investigating themes such as the patronage of princesses and court women in Italian Renaissance, aiming to explore the intersections between women’s history and the history of the State. She is currently working on the theme of the prince’s prerogative of mercy and the granting of pardons, as an answer to the petitions coming from the subjects.

Since 1999 she teaches «Antichità e istituzioni medievali» on the «laurea triennale in Scienze storiche» and is also engaged in the activity of the «Dottorato di ricerca» in medieval history.
